In this post, I offer a handy set of tools for doing a text-based, qualitative discourse analysis.The idea of a discourse toolbox comes from Siegfried Jäger, but I have expanded his approach based on my own experience and the works of other discourse analysts such as Paul Chilton (2004) and Norman Fairclough (1994).But how do you make sure that you have covered all your bases and that you will later be able to make a good case for yourself and your work?

The textbooks are analyzed utilizing Gloria Luzon's Primary and Secondary Genres Theory, Shahnil Saaid and Zaiha Ahmad's Communicative Purpose of a Preface Theory, Leo Lentz and Henk Pander Maat's Functional Analysis Theory to identify genre conventions associated with textbooks prefaces.

Critical discourse analysis theory developed by Teun van Dijk and Normal Fairclough provides a framework for analyzing how the language used in textbooks presents a particular view of groups and cultures outside the Western tradition.

Discourse analysis is a useful tool for studying the political meanings that inform written and spoken text.

In other posts, I have provided a quick video introduction to the topic, and have discussed the ideas behind discourse theory, the main questions that students and researchers will likely ask as they set up their discourse analysis project, and the things that are worth keeping in mind when working with East Asian language sources.

Data included field notes, public documents, writing samples and interviews.

Writing policy documents and transcriptions of interviews were analyzed using the tools of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) (Rogers, 2011).

Person-centered practice is the foremost intervention used in social work, and other disciplines, to work with people labeled with intellectual disability.

My research questions focus on what is revealed about ID in PCP through a genealogical framework and what implications do these discoveries hold for sexuality education and social services, including social workers?

This research investigated children’s emerging theories of writing and how school policies afforded and constrained practice.

Further, this study examined the developmental trajectory of one trilingual student’s writing over time.
