There are large gaps between letters, sometimes as much as five years. It leaves the reader stunned because it is so powerful yet brief. Talking to her friend God, Celie uses certain words without any embarrassment since they are the only words she knows for those terms. After while I had to rest, and that’s when he got down from his horse and started to try to kiss me, and drag me back in the woods. All my little half-brothers and sisters no kin to me. She learns that the man she has thought to be her father is acctually only her step-father; therefore, their children were not born out of incest. The Color Purple is a story about growth, endurance, loyalty, and joy, all nurtured by the strength of love.The letters begin in a time when people ride around in wagons, and when the letters end, people are driving cars. She is writing to God and trusting him as she would trust a best friend for guidance and strength, despite the unhappiness she feels within herself and all those around her. He start to choke me, saying You better shut up and git used to it. And now I feels sick every time I be the one to cook. What is shocking is the fact that her father has raped her and threatened more violence if she tells anyone about it. Well, I started to fight him, and with God’s help, I hurt him bad enough to make him let me alone. He said because of what I’d done I’d never hear from you again, and you never hear from me. Anyhow, I got a ride into town on somebody’s wagon. There are many themes, some concern the relationship between males and females, the relationship between Africans and bkack Americans, and personal independence.

She is more a slave to her husband, than she is a wife. Her husband’s mistress, Shug, comes to the house to recuperate and Celie becomes her nurse. love, Nettie This passage is the first letter that Celie recieves from her sister. They neither belong to the world of the Europeans or the traditional world of their ancestors in Africa.

As Shug grows stronger physically, and as Celie nurses her, Shug encourages Celie to grow stronger psychologically. She receives it well after it was written because just like he said he would, Albert never gave it to Celie.

They became friends with the roadbuilders who were their distant cousins, and much like the time when the blacks sold one another into slavery, they were betrayed.

Consider the seemingly ideal world of family and friends that surrounds Celie at the end of the novel. Do you see any benefits or problems with Walker’s vision?

The Color Purple is not written in the style of most novels.

The author does not tell us everything about the characters, the setting, and why the characters behave the way they do.

Early in the text, violence and injustice occur near churches in order to illustrate the inequity with which women are treated in so-called “God-fearing” towns.
